ex-Muslims

Updated: 4/10/2023

Why ex-Muslims need support?

Apostates from Islam face challenges additional to those that other refugees and immigrants face, as they:

  • are less likely to receive help from NGOs that help immigrants and refugees, as these NGOs strive to battle Islamophobia in Greek society and maintain peace in camps
  • are less likely to be accepted by the Muslim majority in camps
  • face the extra danger of exclusion and attack by the local community of their Muslim countrymen

How to contact us

Use contact [at] atheia.gr or message us in our Facebook page.

Asylum seekers

The Atheist Union of Greece supports ex-Muslims who are situated in Greece, both during the asylum application procedure and after that.

Official information on how to apply for asylum and use basic rights while living under the asylum seeker status can found at https://migration.gov.gr/en/applications/ypiresies-asyloy/

How exactly can you help me?

The Atheist Union is not an organism that focuses on migration, refugees or asylum. We rely on the expertise of other NGOs, like the Greek Council for Refugees and Solidarity Now, to guide those who contact us. We can help with:

  • everyday matters, like contacting public services and getting around in the city
  • getting guidance from refugee related NGOs
  • collecting paperwork to support the asylum application
  • making the issue public, to increase support and chances of success

Can you help me reach Greece?

Based on current laws, we can only provide support asylum seekers after they have crossed into Greek territory. If you are trying to reach Greece, please ask for the support of NGOs in your area and/or try to visit the local embassy or consulate of Greece. A full list of Greece’s embassies and consulates around the world can be found here: https://www.mfa.gr/missionsabroad/en

Next generation ex-Muslims

Second and third generation immigrants and refugees of Muslim background who denounce or even question Islam, often face violence and discrimination within the family: Home-confinement, forced marriage, psychological or physical abuse or even murder (crime of honor).

We records such cases and provide guidance to ex-Muslims who contact us. Greek law provides protection from family abuse, especially for minors and guarantees the emancipation of women.

We also petition for the abolition of Sharia law in the Muslim minority in Thrace, as part of our Proposal for the separation of Church and State.

ex-Muslims community

If you want to meet us and be part of a community of atheists, agnostics and free thinkers -including ex-Muslims, stay tuned for our next meeting, announced in our website and in our Facebook page.

We also maintain an English speaking channel in our Discord server. The server is a safe space where you can speak your mind freely. You can also use a pseudonym, if you prefer.
